Jeff Morton With His GT2 RS
"Red Thunder"
Our Guest Speaker for the May Club Night is Jeff Morton, Club Member and passionate Tarmac Rally & Targa competitor.
After a brain cancer diagnosis in 2010 he thought he might never drive again let alone get back to any motorsport. He tried returning to his novated leasing business but realised he’d have to take a step back and ultimately sold it to the ASX listed Smartgroup in 2016. With a number of years on the sidelines, shortly after the sale Jeff received his Motorsport Australia (CAMS) licence back.
He decided to try Targa events in his Lotus Elise and immediately fell in love with Tarmac Rallying. For the next few years Jeff campaigned a newly acquired Lotus Exige V6 winning GT Sports Trophy (130kmh limited), Rookie Rally and ultimately outright podium positions in Targa events. Jeff was enjoying himself but his competitive nature left him wanting more and it was time to step up to a car he could compete for outright victories. It didn’t take long before he’d narrowed the choice down to a GT2 RS and thankfully Porsche Sydney South had access to a new one he could purchase. They stripped the car and installed a factory Porsche roll cage before sending the car to GWR Australia to complete the transformation into the first 991.2 GT2 RS Tarmac Rally car in Australia.
Come January 2020, the car now had NSW Rally Registration. ‘Red Thunder’ (as the car is now known) was quick out of the box with Jeff & Co-Driver (Navigator) Daymon Nicoli winning their first two Tarmac Rally events in Victoria before COVID saw the cancellation of Targa Tasmania and the rest of the 2020 season. Jeff decided to change tack and took Red Thunder to some local circuit events including Aus Time Attack at Wakefield winning the Supercar Class and ultimately Challenge Bathurst in November. He set the production car lap record in a time of 2:14.2 besting the time of 2:16.5 by German DTM legend Bernd Schneider in a Mercedes-AMG GT R. 2021 saw a return to Tarmac Rallying with Jeff coming 2nd in the Adelaide Rally and 4th in GT Outright at the recent Targa Tasmania.
